Finding Freedom and Comfort in Traveling Alone
Hello Readers!
Today, I’m setting aside the flour and mixing bowls to focus on another passion of mine: travel. While baking often serves as my refuge from stress and anxiety, there’s something equally therapeutic about exploring new cities, immersing myself in different cultures, and, of course, savoring the local cuisine. Travel has always been a source of joy for me, a way to step outside my daily routine and experience the world through a different lens.
Growing Up on the Road: A Love for Travel Sparked Early
Growing up, I was lucky to travel all over the U.S., particularly throughout the South, for sports events. These trips fueled my curiosity, whether I was participating or cheering on my sister as she competed. As I grew older, weekend getaways with friends and loved ones allowed me to explore new places and meet new people. But my true passion for travel ignited during my first solo trip several years ago—a long weekend in Chicago that forever changed the way I experience the world.
The trip came about unexpectedly. The plan was to spend a long weekend in Chicago with friends right after Thanksgiving, but when they came down with COVID and had to cancel, I found myself at a crossroads. My options were to either stay home, or take the plunge and go alone. I chose the latter, and it turned out to be one of the most liberating experiences of my life.
With no one else to consider, I crafted an itinerary that was purely based on my own interests. There were no debates over which museum to visit or where to eat, no stress of trying to balance everyone’s desires in a city brimming with endless possibilities. I woke up early each morning, embracing the brisk November air, and wandered the streets of Chicago as if I were the star of my own movie, lost in a montage of self-discovery.
Highlights of the Journey: Exploring Chicago Through Food
One highlight was an architectural boat tour along the Chicago River – if you haven’t taken it, or you’re planning a trip to Chicago any time soon, I cannot recommend it enough. As I sipped hot Irish coffee, I marveled at the city’s iconic skyline. I spent hours people-watching on the Magnificent Mile, observing the frenzy of Black Friday shoppers who seemed to be on a mission to conquer every luxury store. When the cold became too much, I ducked into cozy coffee shops or wandered through the mall to warm up.
Dining alone became a delightful experience in itself. By avoiding peak hours, I was able to secure tables at sought-after restaurants with stunning views, indulging in meals that catered solely to my cravings at that moment. One day, I played the part of the curious tourist, while the next, I embraced the city like a local, exploring the West Loop based on recommendations from my cousin and friends who knew the city well. I sought out dishes that were not only delicious but also something I could recreate at home. These meals became more than sustenance; they were small pieces of my trip that I could carry with me back to my day-to-day life.
Baking and Solo Travel: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Recreating these dishes at home isn’t just about the flavors—it’s about capturing the essence of the moment. When I bake something inspired by my travels, I’m transported back to that experience. Each step in the process, from mixing to kneading to baking, is infused with the memories of those explorations. Baking, like solo travel, is a journey of self-discovery. Both activities allow me to face challenges, embrace mistakes, and find joy in the process, all while learning more about myself along the way. It’s a reminder that no matter where I am, I can carry those moments of joy with me, infusing my everyday life with the spirit of adventure.
So today, instead of baking up a storm, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the journeys that have shaped me—the ones that took me far from home and the ones that brought me back, each time a little stronger, a little braver, and a little more at peace with myself.
Your Turn: Where Will Your Solo Journey Take You?
So, have you ever taken a solo trip? Or is there a city that’s calling your name for a solo adventure? I’d love to hear your stories and dreams—let’s share our journeys together.
