Hello readers!
We all have those days when the weight of the world feels too heavy, and the noise in our heads just won’t quiet down. It’s in these moments that finding a way to calm down and regain control is crucial. If you’ve never tried baking, or you’re searching for a new method to ease your anxiety, baking cookies could be the perfect place to start.
Why Cookies Are the Perfect Stress-Relief Treat
Cookies are simple. They don’t require complicated techniques or hours of preparation, making them the perfect choice when you’re feeling overwhelmed. But more than that, baking cookies is an act of creation that can help distract you from anxious thoughts and give you something tangible to focus on. It’s about taking control, even if it’s just over the ingredients and the process when everything else feels out of control.
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients for Baking Cookies
Choosing a recipe and gathering your ingredients is comparable to the old-school mindfulness technique of identifying 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, and so on. As you gather your ingredients and equipment, you’re grounding yourself in the present moment. You’re focusing on the task at hand, pulling your mind away from the storm of emotions and anchoring it in something real and tangible. The act of laying everything out in front of you is a way of bringing yourself back to center, preparing not just to bake but to breathe.
Step 2: Measure Your Cookie Ingredients with Precision
When you’re ready, start measuring out your ingredients. This step isn’t about speed; it’s about precision. Keep your hands steady, take deep breaths, and focus on each movement. There’s no rush—take as long as you need. If your hands are shaking or your mind is wandering, slow down. You’re in control of this process. Each cup of flour, each teaspoon of baking soda is a small act of mindfulness. You’re giving your mind something specific to focus on, drawing it away from the anxiety that may be swirling around you. Precision in measuring requires focus, and that focus can help quiet the noise in your head, even if just for a little while.
Step 3: Break Down Cookie Steps Into Manageable Parts
As you begin to mix your ingredients, break down the process into small, manageable steps. Cream the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients. Each of these steps is proof that we can handle things when we break them down into smaller, more manageable bites. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the big picture, but when you take it one step at a time, you realize that you’re more capable than you think. By focusing on each direction individually, you’re not just making cookies; you’re showing yourself that you can handle more than you give yourself credit for.
Step 4: Take a Break During Bake Time
Once your cookies are in the oven, it’s time to pause and reflect. So far, you’ve compartmentalized your feelings, setting them aside to focus on the task at hand. Now, it’s up to you to decide if you’re ready to have those feelings or if you need a little more time. The timer on your cookies is a gentle reminder that you have something important to do in a few minutes. Knowing that you’ll need to attend to them soon can help you keep your emotions in check. You can take this time to cry if you need to—there’s no shame in that. Or, if you’re not quite ready to face your feelings, use the bake time to clean up. Washing the dishes, wiping down counters—these small, repetitive tasks can be soothing and help you maintain the calm you’ve been cultivating. You can also step outside for some fresh air, changing the environment where your stress seems to be thriving.
Step 5: Enjoy the Result—Freshly Baked Cookies
When the timer goes off, your cookies are ready. As you pull them out of the oven, take a deep breath. In that moment, you’ve not only created something delicious, but you’ve also taken significant steps toward calming your mind. The scent of freshly baked cookies fills your home, and as you enjoy that first warm bite, you can savor not just the sweetness of the treat, but the sense of accomplishment that comes with it.
Baking cookies won’t solve all your problems, but it can give you a much-needed break from them. The next time you feel anxiety creeping in, consider heading to the kitchen. Start with something simple, like cookies. Focus on the process, take it one step at a time, and give yourself the grace to pause and breathe. Before you know it, you’ll have a fresh batch of cookies—and maybe even a clearer mind.
